Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) was undoubtedly one of the most remarkable architects of the twentieth century. Born in Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer is regarded as one of the prominent figures in modernist architecture. Niemeyer is famous for designing the civic buildings in Brasilia, which became the capital city of Brazil in 1960. The city was planned from the ground up to embody a modern aesthetic and featured monuments and a preponderance of poured concrete. He also worked closely with other architects in designing the similar United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Known for using abstract curves and forms, Niemeyer designed several buildings throughout Brazil including masterpieces like the Brazilian National Museum, The Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum, and the Natal City Park Tower.
