17. Le Corbusier
Le Corbusier (1887-1965) is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Born in 1887 in Switzerland as Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier was a famous Swiss-French designer, architect, and painter as well as an urban planner. He had a glittering career that spanned more than fifty years during which time he created dozens of buildings in Japan, Europe, North and South America, and India. An urban planner of international repute, Le Corbusier prepared the master plan for Chandigarh City in India. He wanted to improve the growing cities found around the world and pioneered urban planning that incorporated cars and freeways. Le Corbusier is most known for works like the Villa Savoye in Poissy, Villa la Roche in Paris, and Unite d’Habitation in Marseille.
